I quickly realized that I was forgetting why I started my business, and the business model that I had chosen for it! Our business model has always been to provide affordable products and services to individuals, groups, and small business owners, who do not have the buying power of the large corporations. Most are unable to purchase the large minimum quantities to bring their unit prices down, usually due to lack of upfront funds to make the large purchases. They are also unable to move product as fast as the big box stores, and cannot afford to keep too much inventory on hand.
I took a break and went back to the numbers. With the affordability business model front and centre again, I have decided not to worry so much about meeting or beating our competitors pricing structures, but to focus on the smaller quantities needed by our groups and small business owners. They now have an opportunity to offer their members, customers, and employees, some of the products, i.e. gift and promotional products, that were too pricey for them while trying to grow their businesses, or to raise funds to meet their fundraising goals.
So, now if you only need 25 mugs ... you do not need to order 250 to get a good deal!
